Makeup for Eczema and Sensitive Skin
| Hey Christopher, My name is Dee and I’m from the UK. I haven’t used your make-up yet but it seems really convincing. I love watching your video’s and have got a better idea about your products. But I just wanted to ask you a quick question: I had eczema when I was a child and now I have grown out of it, but I do still break out on my face with eczema if I use the wrong product- I have used mineral make-up like sheer cover and bare minerals but they have dried my skin out and my eczema came back a little on my face as I was allergic to some of the ingredients. I have also wasted so much money trying different make-up. I just wanted to know if it’s safe to use your make up on eczema prone skin. I really hope it is as I have tried a lot of mineral make and it doesn’t work for me whereas yours sounds different as its organic and also you don’t put them ingredients in that dries out my skin. I think it will work for my skin. But I just wanted to ask for your opinion before I buy your products. Thank you so much for your time and effort. I’ll be looking forward to your response. Dee |
A: First, because of the unique properties in our products, I can tell you that we are not considered a traditional “mineral makeup”. Because of the fact that we don’t have titanium dioxide, zinc oxide or bismuth Oxychloride in our formulas, it makes our products very different than products like Sheer Cover. Many mineral makeup companies use inexpensive ingredients like bismuth Oxychloride as a filler (also zinc oxide and titanium dioxide). These ingredients have a tendency to irritate many people’s skin. The reason for creating a product free of these ingredients is for people like you. Since we know these three ingredients are irritants, we have taken them out. This means the face products should cause you no irritation at all. Also, because of the fact that I am a licensed esthetician, I took many pains to make sure that the products would work on all skin types. You can always order a sample at www.christopherdrummond.com to see if the products will work for you. However, I am convinced that you will not have a problem with our products. They are the highest quality, thoroughly tested on all skin types, and we have not received any complaints about irritation in the year and a half that we have been selling. You may also want to try the Christopher Drummond Beauty concealer. Since the main ingredient is Shea Butter, it will be very soothing to the skin. This ingredient has been used for thousands of years on many skin irritations, and is wonderful in helping to heal the epidermis. Again, thanks so much for your inquiry, and please let me know if you have more questions.

Spring 2010 Makeup Trends
Skin is in for spring and summer 2010!!!!!
Many people are asking me what are the makeup trends for spring and summer of 2010. My answer is simple: “skin”.
You see, Christopher Drummond Beauty is a makeup company that is very different. We don’t want you to have to use our products. We like to promote healthy and flawless skin naturally, and not through making it “look” like it is natural by piling on makeup. For this reason, we have created a makeup line that promotes healthy skin: it won’t clog pores, damage the skin with harmful chemicals, or give you a made up look. In short, this is beauty the way nature intended-with a little help from us, of course.
SPRING/SUMMER 2010 MAKEUP TRENDS:
Healthy skin. Healthy looking skin will always be in fashion. A radiant glow, blemish-free and even skin is the ultimate fashion accessory. To get this look, you must start with a good skin regime. After all, you can’t use bad skincare and expect your skin to look good. At CDB, we created our “Facial Revitalizing Serum” that is made to be an effective all-in-one treatment for all skin types. It will help to firm, tighten, refine the pores, decongest the skin, and even out skin tone. At the same time it will hydrate the skin and hold moisture in. With ingredients like Carrot extract, DMAE, hyaluronic acid, and meadowfoam extract, you are guaranteed that your makeup will go on smoothly, while at the same time getting amazing benefits from all natural ingredients.
Foundation. Gone are the days of caking on heavy liquid foundation that is also bad for your skin. Summer 2010 is all about sheer powder foundations that minimize skin imperfections, while at the same time allowing the skin to breathe, while looking utterly natural. Veludo Velvet Foundation is perfect for this. While imparting a healthy glow to the skin, this light-as-air foundation is free of titanium dioxide, bismuth Oxychloride and zinc oxide. It is the only powder foundation of its kind, and it will help to transform your skin into a healthy powerhouse. By infusing organic extracts into the formula, it will also act as a treatment. Simply dust it all over your face, and you are done! Sheer. Healthy. Beautiful. Easy.
Color. Following the trend of healthy skin, the colors for Spring/Summer 2010 are beautiful but muted. While 2009 was about brash, unnatural colors, 2010 is lending itself to naturally radiant colors that truly compliment the skin, while still adding a touch of whimsy and carefree splendor. Colors such as a slightly shimmery baby blue, a barely there soft pink, and a softly noticeable tangerine color are all going to be the “go to” colors of the second half of this decade. These colors work on everyone, and are effortless. They lend themselves to an organic feeling of beauty that isn’t at all contrived. Colors like this bring more focus to the skin, cheekbones, eyes and lips. Instead of covering everything up on the face, Spring/Summer 2010 colors help to show the beauty that is there.
Lips. Coral is a great color for most everyone on the lips. Whether it is bright or muted, anyone can wear it. It is always fresh and youthful looking, while at the same time not crazy and blatant. It is rich yet subtle at the same time. It is a new classic that will be explored throughout the year. Lip liners are not used much anymore, but it is always a great idea to have a beautiful nude liner. It helps to fill the lips, prevent bleeding, and looks like a natural extension of the lips. Plus, it works will all colors, so you don’t have to worry about having 20 different colored lip pencils. One nude lip liner works for everything.
Eyes. Two trends are prevalent for 2010 for the eyes, and both include the bottom lid. Adding a splash of color with no heavy liner on the bottom looks fresh, modern and great. It’s a way to add color to the eyes without going overboard. Just take your favorite colored eyeshadow or pencil and add a thin line of color on the bottom lid. Then, blend it out. This color should not match the top lid. It should be a baby blue, light green or light purple color. Use with or without mascara.
Another eye trend is no makeup at all on the bottom. Adding a nice thick liner on top with rich mascara and a colored shadow paired with a minimally bare bottom lashline opens the eyes up, and looks youthful and fresh. Add a small amount of mascara to the bottom lashes, and that’s it. No liner, no color. Just mascara. It keeps the eyes from looking too heavy and is great for everyday.
Most important is to learn what you are putting on your face. Read your ingredients and educate yourself about the harsh ingredients being put into cosmetics. Make educated decisions about your makeup. After all, you want your skin to look it’s best, and what you put on it will directly effect the look and feel of the skin.
Top 10 Ingredients to Avoid in Cosmetics
Here’s some great advice from the blog Meg’s Makeup, written by Jasmine Simone.
As you probably know, Christopher Drummond Beauty does not have any of these ingredients in our products!!!! So, go ahead and indulge!!!
10 ingredients to avoid in cosmetics, and why:
1) Mineral Oil, Petrolatum, Petroleum – You know this dirty bird. The by-product of crude oil, this product is very damaging to the skin and when absorbed, forms a layer that blocks out oxygen and can’t be broken down by our systems. It has been shown to cause blood and skin cancer in animals.
2) Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) & Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) – Used in car washes, garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers and 90 percent of personal-care products that foam. Animals exposed to SLS experienced eye damage, depression, labored breathing, diarrhea, severe skin irritation, mutagenic effects (tumors) and death. SLS may also damage skin’s immune system by causing layers to separate and age.
Parabens (Methyl, Butyl, Ethyl, Propyl, Isobutyl) – This synthetic ingredient is linked to breast and ovarian cancer by interrupting the endocrine system and unbalancing our hormones with synthetic estrogen (called xenoestrgens). It is used in deodorants. Take caution – sometimes they are not labeled as parabens.
Cocoamide Diethanolamine (DEA), Triethanolamine (TEA), & Monoethanolamine (MEA) - Usually used as an emulsifier to create a foaming or sudsing reaction in products. This is easily absorbed throught the skin and can quickly accumulates in body organs, even the brain. Repeated use can result in major increases of liver and kidney cancer.
Dioxin - Often contained in antibacterial ingredients like triclosan, emulsifiers, PEGs and ethoxylated cleansers like Sodium Laureth Sulfate. Dioxin causes cancer, reduced immunity, nervous system disorders, miscarriages and birth deformity. This is one of the scariest ones because it is not listed as an ingredient, it is just one toxic element used to make up some of the synthetic ingredients listed above or a by-product of such.
Propylene Glycol (PG) & Butylene Glycol – This is as an ingredient that has been classified as an severe irritant and is considered so toxic by the EPA that protective clothing is required to handle it and must be buried when disposed of. Yuck! PG is used in industrial anti-freeze and the main ingredient in brake and hydraulic fluid. Avoid anything with PEG or PPG like the plague.
Polyethelyne glycol aka PEG-100 Stearate – Made by ethoxylating Propylene Glycol which in turn releases dangerous levels of Dioxin as a by-product. PEGS are commonly found in personal care, baby care, and sunscreen products. It is an endocrine disruptor and has been linked to cancer in animals. Disturbing!!
Benzoyl Peroxide - BP is addressed by Material Safety and Data Sheet (a database of organic and inorganic chemicals, also known as MSDS) as, and I quote, “May act as a mutagen, produces DNA damage in human and other mammalian cells in some concentrations. …Toxic by inhalation”. Possible tumor promoter. Whoa! This is used frequently in products for acne so my oily and combo skin beauties beware!
DMDM Hydantoin & Urea - used as a preservative, it often releases formaldehyde which may cause skin irritation, joint pain, cancer, allergies, depression, headaches, chest pains, ear infections, chronic fatigue, dizziness, and loss of sleep. Formaldehyde on it’s own has been linked to leukemia, pancreatic, skin, lung, and liver cancer and it’s banned in Canada and Japan.
Phthalates - Commonly found in many products and is usually not listed on labels, this product changes into a xenoestrogen which of course means it is linked to breast and/or ovarian cancers. Other health effects include damage to liver/kidneys, birth defects, decreased sperm counts and early breast development in girls and boys.
Unfortunately readers (I hope my boys out there are reading this too as this can certainly apply to your products), I hate to say the list goes on…and on (I debated making it longer – I have my personal qualms with aluminum, synthetic, fragrance and FD&C color dyes to name a few more.) Currently, these carcinogenic elements and many more are approved by the FDA for use in grooming products. I’ve been doing extensive personal research over the years and have learned to look out for products I can’t pronounce.
!
The Material Safety Data sheet can be accessed at where you can look up the details on any organic or inorganic chemical. I like using the Oxford University section because you can search for any chemical by clicking on letter it begins with which made it easiest to navigate in my research. Healthy-Communications.Com armed me with my base of knowledge of the effects of these ingredients. I really enjoy this site, less for the layout and more for the nitty-gritty low-down on each of the chemicals – where it comes from and its effects (make sure to click on the links of the ingredient’s name – takes you to the MSDS fact sheet on that chemical.)
If you want a more commercial avenue to check out, check out The Safe Shoppers Bible written by Samuel Epstein, MD & David Steinman. It is a very informative book that gives detailed info on these ingredients and many more how to best navigate when shopping at your favorite neighborhood stores. And everyday, people are sharing their and discoveries and experiences with synthetic ingredients. Susan Jeske-a former beauty queen worked in the cosmetic industry for 20 years, trying every product imaginable until she became severely ill. When she started using only all natural or organic products at the advice of her holistic doctor, she was on the road to recovery in 2 weeks! She is now on a mission to share what she has learned in her research of these products and many more…if you get a chance, check her out!
No one will look out for ourselves and our loved ones better than we do. Yes, I am guilty at times of using products that may contain one or two synthetic ingredients I’ve seen on the toxic list….it’s pretty hard to avoid altogether. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to denounce my beautiful, high-pigment neon eyeshadows that MAAAAY contain a few of these ingredients (eep!), but I don’t wear them very often (avg. once a week). But I make sure to share what I know with the people that cross my path who are interested so that they have the chance to make to make that choice for themselves. The GREAT news is that it made me begin exploring the all-natural makeup option and let me tell you, there are some pretty impressive brands out there! My organic blushes and lip glosses have become my favorite makeup staples and I do notice the difference in my skin. If avoiding companies that use these poisonous chemicals became a collective movement, the public could create awareness and prevent their future use because it would hit these companies where it matters most – their pocket books. And we all know that gets the fastest results, ha!
My mottos is – avoid the Top 10+ list entirely in products I use daily if at all possible (i.e toothpaste, body wash, lotion) and look for products with ingredients I recognize. I’ve found that some of my favorite and most effective products are organic and contain 10 ingredients or less. Remember – if it’s edible, it’s credible!

How do you put eyeshadow in the crease? If you look at my page you will see my eye shape…I dont know exactly the shape. I dont know how to describe it. But Im part asian and black and I dont know how to put the darker eyeshadow in the crease without making my eye look funny.
First, don’t use too much color. Start with a light amount. Then close your eye to find the crease. Take your finger and press just above the eyeball. Where you can push in is your crease. Then, take our eyeshadow brush (which is perfect for the crease), and go back and forth with the color (like a windshield wiper). Be sure to blend the color well—that is the key…blend, blend, blend!!!!
Asian eyes are usually ‘hooded’. This means the upper lid hangs down past the crease, and most of the lower lid does not show. Because of this, it is important to create the illusion of a crease by extending out the original crease (see above picture)
Because of the unique problem, I suggest staying away from very dark colors. Instead, use light to medium colors. When using a crease color as instructed above, stick to a mauve or brown.
Liner: If the hood goes all the way down to the eyelashes, apply a small amount of liner on the top lashes, and full amount on the bottom. This helps to compensate for not being able to see the top eyeline. However, if you can see the top line, put very little on the bottom (see above picture), and line the inner eye with white pencil. Be sure to focus liner on the outer corner of the eye.
Review: Overall, focus on extending the crease, and focus on the outer corners of the eye to accentuate the shape of the eye. Do not use very dark colors, and try not to line the bottom lashes. A light shimmery color on the lid helps to open the eye.
JLo: Get the Look, Naturally
If you love JLo’s look at the “This is It” premiere, but want to use an all natural line of makeup to get the look, you’re in luck! Christopher Drummond, creative director of Christopher Drummond Beauty shows you how to get the look with eco friendly products that are just as friendly to your skin.
EYES: It is all about the eyes for this look. To achieve these beautiful sexy smoky eyes, it doesn’t take much. Mystique from CDB will work perfectly for your shimmery silver & black shades and CDB’s Gold/Oro for the golden highlight around the inner corners of your eyes. For this look, keep the darker shades toward the outer crease and the shimmer highlights toward the inner crease of the eye. Start with Christopher Drummond Beauty’s “Beige” color all over the eye as a base. Follow with Gold/Oro. On the lower lid only, apply “Mystique” and blend well. Focus on the outer corner. Then, apply “Amethyst” on the middle of the lid to add depth.
To really make your eyes pop, use Christopher’s “Noir” pencil, which is 100% natural, with no harsh ingredients. Line the eye top to bottom from the inner corner to the outer corner of the eye; smudge the liner for a softer affect. Be sure to get inside of the line on both top and bottom. Use a couple of layers to be sure it will last all night. Follow with the “Mystique” shadow to add extra drama.
FACE/CHEEKS: Keep your skin looking naturally radiant with a dusting of Drummond’s Saude Pele Radiance Booster. It can be used under or over foundation to give your skin the glow that Jennifer is known for. The product also has organic Acai, green tea and soy isoflavones as treatment for you skin.
You don’t want your foundation to look thick or heavy, so use CDB’s Veludo Velvet Foundation. It evens out the skin tone, while giving a luminous look to your skin. It also allows the skin to breathe, and infuses it with organic botanicals.
Bronze the cheeks with Christopher’s Sol Bronzer. Apply where the sun would naturally hit your face, to give you that Brazilian glow.
LIPS: To complement her bold eyes, Jennifer has chosen a nude glossy lip. Begin by applying CDB’s natural concealer on the lips. Then use his Carnivale lip gloss. This will give the lips extra luster, without the petroleum that most lip glosses contain. It also has aromatherapy with the light scent of blood orange.
