I am on a photo shoot right now, and I just wanted to write some musings about what you need to do to be a successful makeup artist.
I was talking to a celebrity client of mine (no, I’m not going to name drop)…However, she was telling me about a recent makeup job she received for a magazine in Europe. She was telling me how the artist was talking incessently. She said it seemed like “nervous chatter”. It was first thing in the morning, and she wanted peace and quite, but the guy just wouldn’t stop talking. Worse yet, he was rambling about nothing of interest. She said it was incredibly irritating, and that she would never use him again.
This brings me to my main point: a lot of being a makeup artist has to do with being a “people person”. The person needs to feel comfortable with you. They need to feel a connection. They don’t want to talk too much or be talked to a lot. Of course, this all depends on the person. You need to get a feel for the person, and what they are like, and what the comfort level is.
If they like you, they will like your makeup. If they don’t like you, they will hate your makeup. It’s that simple.
So listen to what your client is saying. Don’t ramble and focus on the subject at hand: making the person feel comfortable and beautiful. If you do this, I promise, they will call you again!!!
